In both of the classrooms that I have observed the students who where above level didn't meet with the teacher, they didn't have a guided reading group, and they didn't get support in math. They have been excepted to do independent reading for most of the reading block. I have asked to work with these students because its my fear that they will be pushed to the side because they seem capable, but what happens when they don't get a lesson and there is no one to check with them to see how they are doing. Then the teacher moves on with the lesson and before you know it this students who was suppose to be above the rest is falling behind. I understand that its hard to get to these students because of everything else that the teacher has to do, but there has to be a solution to this problem, I hope that I am able to figure it out and balance all of my students in my classroom.
In my math course we did talk about how we can enrich there math by giving them "harder" problems or simple different worksheets. I think the idea is great but I haven't seen in implemented. In Intermediate Literacy we saw a fifth grade teacher doing a guided reading lesson with her gifted students, which was great to see because that is what I think should be happening. Through my other courses we have been talking about how important it is to reach all of our students but no one seems to have seen this in action. It's my goal to look out for this more in the classroom so that I can recreate it in my classroom.
