This week I spent a lot of time working on a Multiple Intelligence (MI) Survey. I did this because I tried to administrator a MI survey on my new 1st grade class. All of the surveys I found I disliked because I also found problems in many of them. The language was either to hard for the 1st graders or it was so simplified that the survey didn't really teach you much about your students. So I took my knowledge of Howard Gardner's MI and decided to make my own survey. I used the information that I learned in my Teaching Mathematics and Intermediate Literacy courses In Mathematics we learned about a concept called funneling where the students don't have to have a set way to get to the answer as long as they know how to solve it. In Literacy we learned a technique for read aloud, instead of ask a question that has a correct answer asking a question that can have many responses so that many students can contribute. Using these concepts I geared my questions toward being more open and not having right or wrong, students simply can tell me how the question makes them feel. Checking out the survey below will give you a better understanding of what I am saying, feel free to use the survey any feedback you may encounter please comment below of contact me at [email protected]!
Since being moved from fourth grade to first I have struggled with the concept of struggle time. It is hard for me to step back and just let them figure it out with out my help. In forth grade I did this but it was for certain things I feel like in first it occurs more often. In my classes this week we read about struggle time and its benefits to the students. In instructional planning I read that it helps kids critical thinking and gives them a more cohesive understanding of the subject. In another reading it was saying that it will give the students chance to express their creativity.
For me it hard to sit there and watch a student struggle, watch them get visibly upset and for someone to tell me that it is what will be the best for the student. The more I think about it the more I agree that in the end it is the best for the student. It will be hard for me to grow accustom to this but I know that it is what is best for the student and myself. Have you experienced this? If so how did you get past it? |
