Literacy Platform
Literacy is what ever is done wit students in reading, so basically everything. In elementary education reading should be integrated into all subject areas. This belief stems from more than just a personal love of reading, it comes from the fact that reading is the building blocks to succeed in all other subject area's. Weather reading is done through guided reading or independent reading. Teaching student to read will be giving them a fantastic tool to succeed.
Literacy is shown through several different formats. In each of these formats it is presented differently to the students and benefits them in many different ways.
Independent Reading: During this time students are, of course, reading by themselves. How the teacher plans on structuring this though is generally different. I believe that this is a great way allow students to explore their own interest. At the same time I think that students should be monitored through independent reading conference to see if the student is choosing books that are just right for them. In this time the teacher would then talk to the student and coach them on their book choices, also allow the student to talk about their book so they can show what they know.
Guided Reading: This is the time that the teacher can directly cater to each students needs. They meet daily with the students to work on their literacy, whether through fluency or maybe comprehension. For the below level students the teacher should meet at least once a day for thirty minutes . While ideally the teacher would do this for all their students it is harder to reacher the on level and above level students, the teacher should still at least meet with them two to three times a week for about 20 to 30 minutes.
Shared Reading: Giving all of the students the same text and modeling strategies to them is essential literacy instruction. In the primary grades this is how a teacher can show them the order in which text is read. Where as in intermediate grades the teach is able to teach them about strategies, like rereading, and text features, like captions. This is where most literacy instruction should be modeled and then it should be perfected by the students in guided reading and throughout assignments.
Reading and Writing Connections: This is the connection between reading and writing. It is a simple but effective concept. When reading and writing instruction are separate they can certainly be powerful, but when you combine the instruction and integrate the reading and witting strategies together it makes a bigger impact. There are many components to writing, it is important to focus on one or two writing traits at a time. Individual conferencing with students is the most effective way to accomplish this. It is more important to tell students what you like about their writing and focus on the positive of their writing. When you address the areas that need improvement it is more important to focus on one or two specific traits that will most improve their piece.
