Explaining The Picture:
The Purple triangles are the doors in the classroom. The one at the bottom is the door the door to enter the classroom. The two at the top lead in to a closet and a unisex bathroom. The long blue rectangle represents the counter and cabinets. The cabinets below the counter would be for the kids, a place for their backpacks and access to supplies. The top cabinet would than be for me. The two long brown rectangles and the two short ones are the bookcases. The two long for the students library and the others would be for me, books for groups and things for monitoring the students ( i.e. DRA supplies or articles set for running records.) A group table is located just in front of the smaller bookcases. The gray rectangle is where the computers will be set up. The students are set up in three groups of six student. The light brown pentagon in the front would be a place that I would display student work and have other things for the students. The blue line represents my smart board and next to that is my brown media cart, with a laptop and Elmo( this is the brown square). My desk is located in the front of the room so that I can see the students wherever they are at in the classroom. The blue shapes across the room represents mats, I want these spaces so that the students can read on the floor I just don't want them everywhere, mainly underneath desk, so this will limit them to these areas. The remaining pieces, the red shapes a combination of teacher chairs and "comfy chairs." The circle is a beanbag chair and the hexagon on the mat is a large chair that I would use for read alouds ,the students would be able to earn these and sit in them while they read.
I choose to do groups because of the classroom profile. There are many different types of students and they can gain much from each other. One student maybe highly motivated but is a struggling reader so putting him with a student who is strong academically but is not highly motivated would benefit both of the students. Another benefit to having the students in groups it make it easier to do group work, they already have a group and they have a space to conduct the work. We have learned much about about groups this semester and I believe that the benefits they provide out weigh the negatives. I would also make sure that the groups were at an angle so it would be easy for the kids to see the smart board.
Ideally I would have huge windows in my room, the two yellow lines, I think having sunshine in the classroom make it more lively than the fluorescent lighting. It would also be great to have because there are so many science experiments that can be done with sunlight.
The two desk in the room, the one in the front and the one in the back give me a full view of the class. I would be able to sit at these and know what every student is doing just by glancing up. I think its important that the guided reading desk in the back is away from the bathrooms and desk because it needs to be a space that the students feel comfortable, and for it to be away from the traffic of other students.
Having those large books cases and all the different reading areas shows the importance that reading will represent in my classroom. Having this space will show the student that I don't just say its important but I provide them with the space and environment to achieve this standard.
Having the computers is essential. I would like to promote AR testing so having that space in the class would make it easier for them to access the testing. Technology is also a huge part of the world now and having students that can use this efficiently will give them an advantage when they enter secondary education.
I would have posters and anchor chats across the classroom walls and on the cabinets. I would use any available space to either hang classroom rules or charts to help them , such as a PIE chart to demonstrate authors purpose. I would utilize the cabinets space to provide a word wall. Having them here makes it so that this space isn't going to waste but also so that when it comes time to do standardized testing I could just open the cabinets and hide the words instead of taking down a years worth of words.
Having a bathroom in the classroom will make it easy to let them go to the restroom and it will negate the process of sending multiple students for one student to go to the restroom.
